Sappington Elementary briefly locks doors following off-campus assault

Sappington Elementary School on Gravois Road briefly was on lockdown Thursday morning following a report of an assault off campus.

School Resource Officer Paul Gordon received a call from county police at 10:45 a.m. notifying him that an assault had occurred in a neighborhood across Gravois, according to a letter from Principal Craig Hamby.

As a precaution, officials locked the school’s exterior doors and kept students inside until the suspect was taken into police custody around 11:15 a.m., Hamby wrote.

A Lindbergh security officer also monitored the parking lot during this time.

The suspect was never on or near school property at any time, and students continued their normal classroom routines without disruption, according to the principal.

“I would like to commend our staff for how quickly and professionally they responded to this situation,” Hamby wrote. “Fortunately, no immediate danger resulted from the search for this individual.”
