Route 66 Car Cruise now accepting grant requests from nonprofits

The second annual Route 66 Car Cruise is accepting grant applications from local nonprofit organizations wishing to benefit from the proceeds of the Saturday, Aug. 13, event in Crestwood and Sunset Hills.

It is the goal of the Route 66 Classic Car Cruise to choose one or more local charities to benefit from any excess revenues generated by the cruise each year, according to a news release.

The inaugural Route 66 Car Cruise last year awarded contributions to the USO Toys for Tots campaign and the Lindbergh School District Foundation Teacher’s Grant program.

Checks were presented at the November Networking Luncheon for the Crestwood-Sunset Hills Area Chamber of Commerce.

On hand to present the checks was Butch Thomas, then-president of the Sunset Hills Historical Society and treasurer for the Route 66 Classic Car Cruise.

The second annual Route 66 Classic Car Cruise will take place from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m., rain or shine.

Event festivities will include vintage vehicles cruising Watson Road in Sunset Hills and Crestwood, culminating at Crestwood Court, Watson and Sappington roads, where awards will be announced.

Also on tap will be family oriented games and dancing to oldies music by St. Louis’ own Sh-Boom at 7 p.m.

All applicants for 2011 Route 66 Car Cruise grants will be considered providing they meet certain requirements:

• All applicants must have 501(c)(3) status.

• Provide the Car Cruise Committee with a mission statement.

• Complete the appropriate form before June 1.
