Relay for Life set Saturday at Mehlville High

Walkers and joggers will go around the clock in the battle against cancer during the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of South County.

Teams of south county residents will gather at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 3, at Mehlville Senior High School, 3200 Lemay Ferry Road, for an overnight relay against cancer.

The Relay for Life is a family oriented team event where participants can walk relay-style around the track and take part in fun activities off the track. Teams can include co-workers, club members, family and friends who have gathered donations before the event.

“The entire community is invited to participate in the Relay for Life. There will be activities and entertainment all night long and we encourage all community members to come see what Relay is all about,” Chrissy Kamp, co-chair, stated in a news release. “Relay for Life is a unique opportunity for our community to come together in the fight against cancer. Many of the participants are cancer survivors — anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer — which serves as a reminder that our community is not immune to this disease and we can actually help our friends, families and neighbors who have been touched by cancer.”

An opening ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. A luminaria ceremony will take place at 9 p.m. to honor the community’s cancer survivors and those lost to the disease.

Survivors will circle the track rimmed with glowing luminarias — candle lanterns — while the names of survivors and those lost to the disease are read aloud.

Luminarias can be purchased for $5 by calling (314) 286-8197.

Funds raised at the Relay for Life will enable the American Cancer Society to support local services and resources for cancer patients and their families. Funds also support critical cancer research and community education programs designed to teach people how to reduce their risk of developing cancer.
