Reader who worked for White House asks critic to ‘chill out, Jerry’

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

This is in response to Jerry Klein’s Jan. 31 letter criticizing my letter about the Secret Service and Green Park Ward 1 Alderman Michael Broughton’s letters.

Chill out, Jerry. I did not say that Secret Service investigates people who are critical of the president. That would be not only un-American but ridiculous.

My letter was not about dislike or disagreement. You can do that all you want, as we see every single day in the media. It was about language or suggested actions that cross the line.

Correspondence to the White House that uses “sewer language” simply goes unanswered. Letters that border on threatening, repeat over-the-top excessive anger, or use language that suggests the writer may be irrational are another matter. After further scrutiny, Secret Service may decide to play it safe and merely add their name to a watch list that bars the person from attending an event that would put them in close range of a protectee.

Broughton’s constant rants come close but stop just short of that.

As George Herbert Walker Bush might have said, “Jerry, let’s have lunch sometime and talk about this.”
