Reader urges enactment of flat income tax

To the editor:

Recently, the Call published a letter brandishing certain politicians for voting to end the 529 college savings plan.

I believe the letter is a strong endorsement for enactment of a flat income tax with elimination of all the other taxes that the state of Missouri currently receives and for ending the use of the income tax as a means to promote social agendas.

Since the early 20th century when the income tax was enacted, government at all levels has increased from 8 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product to the current 40 percent. The income tax code has arguably become the most cumbersome document in the history of man.

People today have trouble making ends meet and providing for their families be-cause today’s take-home pay of 60 cents on the dollar doesn’t stretch as far as 92 cents did at the beginning of the last century.

We would all be better able to save for college and provide many other things for our families if government didn’t take so much of our incomes. And, if we paid only one tax instead of a gasoline tax, a sales tax, a property tax, a real estate tax and many more, we would all be more aware of the size of the bite of government on our wallets.
