Reader trying to work up some sympathy for Doercrest Drive residents

To the editor:

I’m trying hard to work up some sympathy for the plight of Crestwood Ward 4 Alderman Mike Tsichlis and his fellow residents on Doercrest Drive.

Lindbergh Schools’ plans for Long Elementary School sound low-impact to me.

I think these residents should look at an alternate scenario from which they are being spared: The property owner could have sold the land to a developer and probably made more money.

Looking at a map, Doercrest Drive is a stub street, which means the original developer in the 1960s intended to extend the street into the former Abeln family property and build more houses at some point. If that were to happen today, you can bet there would be 12 to 16 single-family houses put on that 4.5-acre lot, or 20 to 25 villas.

Figure an average of two cars per residence, and there could be 20 to 50 additional cars traveling on Doercrest Drive every day, any time of the day or night.

So what would a current Doercrest Drive resident prefer, five buses twice per school day during a 10-minute period, nine months of the year, or dozens of cars throughout the day and night, year-round?
