Prevent weeds from sneaking into your yard

Weeds compete with grass for moisture and nutrients, robbing your lawn of the food that it needs.

Not only that, but weeds look bad and detract from the curb appeal of your home.

In fact, the Lawn Institute says that homeowners may realize up to a 15 percent increase in property value because of a well-manicured lawn and landscape.

The best way to keep the weeds out is with a balanced lawn-care program that includes:

• Proper watering. Watering too much or not enough invites weed growth.

In mid-summer, most lawns need at least an inch of water a week — more in hot summer areas.

Watering early in the morning is best because it helps prevent lawn diseases.

• Fertilizing. Feed warm-season grasses in late spring and summer and cool-season grasses in the fall and spring.

• Frequent mowing. Taller grass means deeper roots.

In midsummer, set your mower to cut at the upper end of your lawn’s recommended mowing height.

Mow when the grass is a third higher than the recommended mowing height.

Despite the best-laid plans and effort, weeds still can sneak into your yard.

The question is: What is the best way to get rid of the weeds?

Traditionally, it always has depended on the type of weed in your lawn.

Most common lawn weeds fall into one of two categories: broadleaf weeds such as dandelions and clover, and grassy weeds, including crabgrass.

Most weed killers for lawns eliminate either broadleaf weeds or grassy weeds, but not both.
