Powers exceptional candidate for school board

To the editor:

Elaine Powers is an exceptional candidate for the Mehlville school board. Her commitment, dedication and expertise in the field of education makes her the best choice to serve the students of the district.

Not only is she a parent of children in the district, but she directs a well-respected and very successful child-care center.

I met Elaine after she was hired as executive director of the Lemay Child and Family Center in August 2002.

Such words as respected or successful were not used to describe the center at that time. It was struggling financially; the lack of stable funding had affected program quality. Turnover was high, among both management and staff.

Elaine stepped into an extremely challenging situation. What she has accomplished in less than 10 years is phenomenal. With sound fiscal oversight, not only did she stabilize funding, but she diversified and increased it, while building reserves and investing in improvements.

The existing building was renovated and a new addition was built, increasing capacity 25 percent. Infant and toddler care was added, curriculum was streamlined and many new programs were added, including summer reading for school-age children and parent education and support programs. Lastly, under Elaine’s watch national accreditation was finally achieved. I’m sure every child, parent and resident in the district would welcome such accolades.

Although my children have long since graduated from Oakville High, I want the children who follow in their footsteps to have the best possible education.

Electing Elaine Powers to the Mehlville school board will assure that they do.
