After squeezing out a 2-0 victory over District 10 leader Eureka Friday, the Crest-wood Post 777 American Legion varsity baseball team dropped a disappointing 10-0 decision to Oakville Sunday night.

Crestwood (5-4, 2-1 District 10) was shut out for the first time this season. The de-feat marked the fourth loss for Post 777 in the past five games.

“It’s one of those situations where we were coming off a big win on Friday by beating Eureka 2-0,” Crestwood head coach Sean Irwin told the Call. “We’re missing three guys, but that’s no excuse because our other nine didn’t show up to play tonight.

“It’s kind of discouraging that some guys get the opportunity to play and don’t make the most of that opportunity,” he added.

Crestwood starting pitcher Dave Ounan-ian threw just two innings pitched and gave up six runs on six hits. Ounanian also walked two and hit one batter in his first loss of the season. He’s currently 2-1 overall with a 4.90 earned run average.

“Dave has been great for us this year,” Irwin said. “He clearly did not have his stuff tonight and that’s why I got him out of there after two (innings). It’s one of those situations where pitchers are going to have their off games and hopefully he’ll come back in Omaha and throw a good game for us.”

Ounanian was relieved in the third inning by Justin Miller, who gave up three runs on three hits in four innings pitched.

Just one of Miller’s runs were earned as he walked two and struck out two in his third appearance on the mound this season.

“Justin’s one of those scrappy kids that’s always going to go out there and give you 110 percent,” Irwin said. “He hasn’t gotten a lot of innings at this point because our pitching has done very well. He kept the ball down and I was impressed with the job that he did for us.”

Miller was relieved in the seventh inning by Tim Eikmeier, who gave up one run on three walks, which ended the game due to the 10-run rule.

“Eikmeier is another guy that hasn’t had the opportunity and tonight was that oppor-tunity to prove himself,” Irwin said. “It was nice to get Tim out there and get him a couple of innings.”

The only highlight at the plate for Crestwood was the play of first baseman Robby Meeh, who was 3-3 overall with one double.

“Robby is a guy who’s actually a double roster player with the JV team,” Irwin said. “This was his first game with us and he did a great job. He’s definitely a guy that’s going to have to contribute for us in order to get through these injuries and still be competitive.”

Crestwood is on the road this weekend as it travels to Omaha, Neb., for a tournament. Crestwood will play against Mine-ola, Texas, at 4 p.m. Friday and against Omaha at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Post 777 also will play Grandview High School at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
