Point Elementary students learn important safety tips through interactive simulation

As Point Elementary students walked through an interactive, life-size city in their gymnasium last week, they learned a variety of important lessons about how to maintain their safety every day.

“We wanted to bring this free program to Point because it covers topics we discuss in class, but it gives students a hands-on experience relating to these topics,” Point Elementary physical education teacher Jamie Stege stated in a district news release.

Led by parent volunteers, each class spent an hour walking through the life-like city, using crosswalks and stopping at the train tracks while waiting for the MetroLink to pass. Kindergarten through second-grade students learned about safety topics including what to do if approached by a stranger or a stray animal, how to be a responsible pedestrian and staying safe while riding a bike. Parent volunteers taught the third- through fifth-grade students safety tips for the playground, at home and when playing sports, in addition to car safety and what to do if trapped in a car trunk.

To determine the effectiveness of the Safety Street simulation, the Point students took pre- and post-tests conducted by St. Louis Children’s Hospital staff to assess what they learned. A final evaluation report, including knowledge gained by students, was shared with the school.

Every kindergarten through fifth-grade student at Point had the opportunity to participate in the injury-prevention program from April 24 to April 27. St. Louis Children’s Hospital sponsored the free Kohl’s Safety Street simulation.
