Parkway South snaps Flyers’ six-game winning streak in 7-6 heartbreaker

Parkway South snapped the Lindbergh High School foot-ball team’s six-game winning streak Friday night, handing the Flyers a heartbreaking 7-6 loss.

The game not only featured two of the Suburban West Conference’s best teams, but also a sloppy and soggy Lindbergh field, which Parkway South used to its advantage as the Patriots racked up 191 yards on the ground to defeat the Flyers.

“Parkway South is definitely a good ball team,” Lind-bergh head coach Tom Beauchamp told the Call. “If you run the ball in the mud, you’ll do OK. But if you try throwing it, that’s a different story.”

The Patriots jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the second quarter as Kirk Stilwell scored on a 36-yard touchdown run. Stilwell torched the Flyers for 111 yards rushing on 22 carries. Lindbergh responded late in the fourth quarter as Tori King scored on a one-yard touchdown run with 5:18 remaining. The junior running back finished the evening with 14 carries for 80 yards.

“Tori had a good game,” Beauchamp said. “He worked his butt off and gave us everything he had.”

The Flyers then attempted to put the game away, going for the two-point conversion that would have given them an 8-7 lead. But the conversion failed, and Beauchamp ex-plained why he decided to go for the win.

“The field was mushy and nearly impossible to kick on,” Beauchamp said. “We were trying to put the game away and felt that was the best decision for our kids.”

Senior quarterback Joe Haas was solid throughout the game despite the adverse field conditions. He went 7 of 18 for 79 yards and two interceptions.

Lindbergh’s Kelan Bannecke led the Flyers with four receptions for 62 yards in the loss. The senior wide receiver leads Lindbergh with 412 yards receiving.

Junior Peter Schoemehl and senior Chris Gal had outstanding nights defensively as Schoemehl led the Flyers with seven tackles and four assists. The inside linebacker has 26 tackles and nine assists along with one sack and one fumble recovery.

Gal also had seven tackles along with one fumble recovery. The senior linebacker leads the Flyers in fumble re-coveries with three.

Up next for the Flyers is an important District No. 2 meeting with St. Louis University High. The Junior Billi-kens are 7-0 overall and are coming off a 26-7 thumping of CBC.

“SLUH’s got a lot of speed, and their defense is very solid,” Beauchamp said. “They’ve got a lot of good athletes, and they’re coached very well. The key for us is to hang in there and give ourselves an opportunity to win in the fourth quarter.”

Lindbergh’s district game at SLUH begins at 7 p.m.
