Police say an intruder fatally shot by an off-duty officer gained entry to a Lakeshire home by throwing this large, concrete planter through a rear door, shattering it.

An off-duty St. Louis County Police officer shot an intruder at about 5:50 p.m. Saturday in the 10000 block of Lakeside Drive in the city of Lakeshire.

The suspect, identified by police as Tyler Gebhard, 20, of the 7900 block of Navajoe Street, was taken to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to police.

Gebhard was known to the officer, who has not been identified by police, and the four additional family members present at the residence, police said, and had made a series of threats in prior days and hours leading up to the incident.

These threats were from the suspect to the family, as well as uninvolved members of the community.

On Saturday, Gebhard arrived unannounced at the officer’s relative’s home, repeatedly rang the doorbell, banged on windows and doors and demanded entry into the home.

When he did not gain entry through the front of the residence, Gebhard went to the backyard and threw a large, concrete planter through a rear door, shattering it. He then entered the home through the damaged door, according to police.

The officer confronted Gebhard as the officer’s wife, mother-in-law and two very young children barricaded themselves in a room and called 911. The off-duty officer, who was dressed in gym shorts and a T-shirt, gave a series of verbal commands, which Gebhard did not comply wth and advanced further into the home. Fearing for his life and the lives of the others in the home, the off-duty officer shot the suspect, police said.

Responding officers administered first aid to the suspect until EMS arrived to transport him to an area hospital. He was pronounced dead later at the hospital.

The St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons and Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene to conduct investigations.
