Over the course of the next several years, local baseball fans most likely will remember Mike Moore.

A recent graduate of Oakville Senior High School, Moore was named the Most Valuable Player of the Missouri State High School Baseball Coaches Association’s East-West Senior All-Star game earlier this month as the East All-Stars defeated the West 7-4. Moore, who played shortstop at Oakville this past season, racked up two doubles and drove in three runs and drew a walk. He also came into the game in the ninth inning to garner the save.

“Mike was just fantastic in that game,” said Oakville head coach Rich Sturm, who was an assistant coach for the East All-Stars. “This is something that he can be really proud of and for me to be a part of it, I was just really happy for him.”

This past season at Oakville, Moore batted .383 with a team-leading 28 RBI and 10 stolen bases. He also tied for the team lead in home runs with a total of three out-of-the-park shots.

The Tigers went 20-6 overall and won the Suburban West Conference championship with a record of 6-2. Oakville advanced to the Class 4 state sectional game before falling 12-5 to Parkway South.

“Coach Sturm told us that this year’s team was probably one of the best teams that he’s coached,” Moore said. “I’m the only starter leaving, so they should have no problem making the final four next year.”

Moore is slated to at-tend Southwestern Illinois College this coming fall and he plans on playing shortstop for the Blue Storm.

After two seasons at SWIC, he hopes to enter the Major League Baseball draft. But over the long haul, he plans on majoring in education and hopes to become a health and physical education instructor while also coaching high school baseball.

“Hopefully I’ll get drafted after SWIC,” Moore said. “I talked to the (New York) Yankees and the (Los Angeles) Angels last fall and I really plan on going on to the next level. But someday I want to be a high-school baseball coach.”

The Oakville head coach believes Moore has the right tools to not only be a NCAA Division I ballplayer, but possibly join the professional ranks.

“I think that Mike has a tremendous amount of upside potential,” he said. “He has all the natural tools needed to play at the next level and I think he also has some big-time potential to not only be an infielder or an outfielder, but also be a closer.”
