Oakville’s hits outweigh errors in 13-10 win

When a team commits five errors during a baseball game, it tends to be on the losing end of the box score.

But that wasn’t the case for Oakville Sen-ior High School Friday when the Tigers (19-1, 6-1 Suburban West) hammered out 13 runs on 13 hits in a 13-10 win over Hickman.

“I wasn’t happy with the way we played, but we still found a way to win,” Oakville head coach Rich Sturm said. “I don’t know if it was a lack of focus, but there were some routine plays that we just didn’t make. We’ve got to find a way to become more consistent on defense.”

Oakville starting pitcher Bubba Brad-shaw gave up seven runs on six hits in six innings. Bradshaw gave up just one earned run against the Kewpies while striking out eight and walking two. He’s 5-0 overall with a 1.93 ERA.

“I thought that Bubba had good stuff (against Hickman),” Sturm said. “I thought that this was his best start since the Lafayette game, where he gave up just one run on three hits.”

Pitcher Ryan Daniels grabbed the save against Hickman, giving up just one run in two-thirds of an inning.

The save was Daniels’ second of the season as he upped his record to 4-0 overall with two saves and a 3.00 ERA.

“Ryan’s a kid that we’ve had our eye on since tryouts,” Sturm said. “The biggest plus that Ryan’s given this team is the fact that he can pitch out of the bullpen.”

Oakville’s Drew Stanton hammered in two runs on two hits while also scoring a run. Stanton upped his average to .326 with 15 runs scored.

“Over the last couple of weeks, Drew’s raised his batting average 75 to 80 points,” Sturm said. “He’s somebody that’s caught my attention as of late because he’s really striking the ball well.”

Oakville is back at 4:15 p.m. today — May 7 — when the Tigers play host to Marquette in the final regular game of the season. Today’s game possibly could be the most important game of the year for the Tigers because they need a win over Marquette to solidify a possible share of the conference championship with Lafayette.

Marquette (10-3, 3-2) is coming off an impressive 13-0 win over Lindbergh on Saturday.

“Marquette has a couple of Division I players on their roster and they mirror us offensively in that they can flat out hit the ball,” Sturm said. “This is an opportunity for us to get a piece of the conference championship, so there’s a lot at stake. It’s going to be a good game.”
