Oakville volleyball team wins Festus Invitational

The Oakville Senior High School girls’ volleyball team won six games Saturday to capture the Festus Invitational championship.

The Tigers (27-5, 7-1 Suburban West) defeated Lutheran South (16-10, 2-3 MWAA) 25-15, 25-14 in the championship game.

Oakville’s win avenged a 25-20, 25-18 loss to Lutheran South in the same tourney last season.

But Tigers head coach Morgan Lucas credits the team’s solid play over six games due to playing a “best-of-five” series with nearly every opponent this season.

Outside hitter Lauren Sazama led the Tigers with six kills in the win over Lutheran South.

“Lauren was the team MVP last year and coming into this season, she was leading our team in kills until she got injured a few weeks ago,” Lucas said. “She’s back now and is really getting back into the swing of things.”

Setter Emma Brydel racked up 14 assists for the Tigers against the Lancers.

“Emma’s been a huge asset to our team this year,” Lucas said. “She’s proven that she can run the court and has that ability to speed up our offense when she’s out there setting.”

Middle hitter Samantha Haegele led Oakville with four blocks and also had five kills.

“Sam’s currently leading in blocks and aces and kills,” Lucas said. “She has a huge kill percentage and is one of the best middle hitters in the area.”

Right-side hitter Lexi Cibulka also had five kills for the Tigers.

“Lexi is a power hitter that puts up big blocks for us,” Lucas said. “She’s a spark plug on the court and always keeps the team excited.”

The Tigers return to action at 6 p.m. Friday when they play host to Ursuline Academy. The game is Senior Night as Alex Bramer, Elyse Hebenstreit, Andrea O’Brien, Lauren Sazama and Sarah Tharp will play the final home game of their careers.
