Those who say it’s tough to win on the road should talk to the Oakville Senior High School girls’ basketball team.

The 4-2 Tigers know all about winning games on the road as they’re slated to play their first 11 games of the 2005-2006 season away from home. In fact, the Tigers are not scheduled to play at home until Friday, Jan. 20, when they play host to Lindbergh.

Despite the challenging schedule, Oak-ville head coach Ron Thompson believes his Tigers are starting to play some solid basketball after a 51-35 win over Farm-ington.

We’re starting to play better,” Thompson told the Call. “We played three solid quarters against Farmington.”

Oakville jumped out to a 19-14 lead after the first quarter, but gave up its five-point lead by halftime as the Knights tied the score 21-21. The Tigers clawed their way to a 40-30 lead by the third quarter as the Knights mustered just 14 points in the second half.

Oakville’s Sherry Zehner led all scorers with 15 points and seven rebounds. The senior forward also recorded three steals and one assist in the win over Farmington.

“Sherry played her best two games on Friday and Saturday,” Thompson said. “She’s really starting to play more comfortably and I think that it’s just taken her a little bit of time to get back into the groove of things.”

Faith Zabek also scored in double figures for the Tigers as she racked up 12 points and five rebounds. The Oakville senior forward also had two steals and two assists.

“Faith’s also been playing really well,” Thompson said. “I think she and Sherry have been playing really well together down the stretch here lately.”

Thompson also was pleased with the play of senior guard Megan Reel, who put up six points and five assists.

“Megan’s had 14 assists in the past two games,” Thompson said. “She’s been getting us a lot of easy baskets and has probably been our best all-around player.”

The Tigers are back in action at 6 p.m. Friday when they travel to Lafayette for a conference game against the defending Su-burban West Conference champions.

The Lancers are 4-1 overall and are coming off a 67-35 win at Rockwood Summit.

“They (Lafayette) pose similar problems that Mehlville does for us,” Thompson said. “We’re going to try and make it a transition game as opposed to being a half-court game.”
