Most games last Friday night, as might be expected, were postponed until Saturday due to heavy rain and lightening.

The game between Oakville and Summit, however, was only delayed for about two hours, and when the weather allowed the Oakville Tigers fought from behind and came away with an 18-15 last-second win over the Summit Falcons.

Brendan Marks, with no time left in the game, nailed a 19-yard field goal to give Oakville the win, improving its record on the season to 2-2.

“It was tough for both teams sitting in those locker rooms for two hours,” Oak-ville Coach Jerry Maulin said of the de-layed start. “But afterwards, it was wonderful. It was great for the kids.”

Summit (2-2) raced out to a 15-0 first half lead on touchdown runs by Isaac Woodson and Vince Hulett, but Oakville responded in the third quarter when Ryan Gray ran 13 yards to get the Tigers on the board.

When Dan Graham ran in a two-point conversion, the lead was cut to 15-8.

“We knew if we scored we were going to go for two when we scored,” Maulin told the Call. “We wanted to know what we had to do to win, so we went for the two.”

The Tigers weren’t done, though. With under three minutes to go in the game, Graham ran for five of his 79 yards for an Oakville touchdown, and the point after tied the game. Then, with Summit trying to move the ball up the field, Gene Gallagher came up with a huge interception to get the ball back for Oakville.

“Gene made a really great catch,” Maulin said. “He got a great break on the ball and had to really stretch to get it.”

That interception by Gallagher helped to set up the dramatic, game-winning field goal.

After Oakville moved the ball downfield to the two yard-line, Gray approached the line of scrimmage and was able to take the snap and spike the ball before time ran out.

After the spike stopped the clock, Marks came out and after a Summit timeout kicked the game-winner.

The Oakville defense held Summit to just 90 yards rushing and 127 yards of total offense on the night.

Reggie Ward led Oakville in rushing, picking up 97 yards on 17 carries as the Tigers had five players combine to rack up 206 yards on the ground. Maulin has been very pleased with the combination of Ward and Graham in the backfield.

Next up, Oakville will play host to Seckman at 7 p.m. Friday at Oakville High School, 5557 Milburn Road.
