Oakville Speech and Debate Team earns honors

Oakville Senior High School’s Speech and Debate Team recently sent 23 students to compete against 32 other schools in the area’s largest invitational at Pattonville High School.

A total of 19 Oakville students competed in debate while all 23 competed in at least one speech event.

In the speech categories, Samantha Ravens captured first place in the humorous interpretation event, Adam Ford earned second place in student congress, Travis Zimpfer came in third for prose interpretation and Sarah Rajchart finished sixth in dramatic interpretation.

Ford and Geoff King were elected permanent presiding officer in their houses after three preliminary rounds.

Of the 101 students in congress, 12 were members of the Oakville Senior High squad. Oakville High also placed three students in the Super Session: Ford, King and Lauren Hebert.

In debate, Ford took second in the Lincoln-Douglas event while Zimpfer and King took fourth in the Championship Public Forum.

Oakville speech and debate coach Ed Taylor also was a winner at the competition. Taylor was honored with the Pattonville National Forensic League’s Outstanding Coach of the Year Award.
