Oakville softball team wins Summit tourney

Although three games do not make a season, the Oakville Senior High School girls’ softball team is building momentum in the right direction.

The Tigers (3-0) won the Rockwood Summit Tournament last week with an impressive 3-1 win over host Summit.

Oakville head coach Rich Sturm believes that although last week’s three-game winning streak is a move in the right direction, the team still has a lot to prove on the field.

“Early in the season, every team is trying to establish momentum,” Sturm said. “It’s a new season and this team hasn’t proven anything. What this team needs is to form an identity. So far, we’re going in the right direction.”

Starting pitcher Megan Schallom took the win over Summit as she gave up just one run on five hits in seven innings. The senior hurler also walked one and struck out six to bring her record to 3-0 overall with a 0.00 earned-run average.

“Megan had a tremendous tournament,” Sturm said. “She was very sharp and had very good command of her pitches. She did an unbelievable job out there.”

The Tigers trailed the Falcons 1-0 going into the top of the seventh inning.

Oakville shortstop Marissa Simon got things going with a double. That led outfielder Remy Edwards to advance Simon to third base on a sacrifice bunt.

Outfielder Rachel Schaefer singled up the middle to drive in Simon and tie the game. Schaefer then stole second base to put the Tigers with a runner in scoring position and one out.

Outfielder Amanda Schuchardt struck out, but Schallom drove in Schaefer on a single to right field.

With two outs and a runner on first, third baseman Courtney Kennedy hammered out a double, driving in Schallom and eventually giving the Tigers the 3-1 win. Kennedy finished the day with a four-hit performance that included two doubles and one run batted in.

“Courtney had a great day,” Sturm said. “Whenever you get four hits off the de-fending state champions, you’ve got to give her a lot of credit.”
