To the editor:
I can understand the outrage if a coal plant opened up next to the neighborhood school.
I can understand the anger if a tavern opened up across the street where little kids go to class. But, what I cannot understand, is the uproar over the opening of a senior apartment complex next to a preschool in Oakville.
Most of these residents are going to be old and sick and poor. So I do not see where the threat of dangerous criminal activity exists, since most have trouble moving around, let alone driving a car to cause a senior citizen crime wave.
Some Oakville residents expressed concern that the grandchildren of some seniors would visit and stir up trouble.
Let me tell you this: When I was in my 20s, I visited my grandma when she was living in a retirement home, and I saw virtually no other people my age visiting, let alone anyone visiting the seniors. The residents would just stay there unless they rode in a van to the grocery store or a family member picked them up for a family outing.
I believe the residents of Oakville should reconsider their thinking regarding the construction of the senior apartment complex, and welcome the seniors to their community.
I think it would set a good example for the kids attending the preschool next door.
