To the editor:
The proposed tax increase via Proposition A by the Mehlville school board is an exorbitant amount that they are asking voters to approve.
According to the Post-Dispatch, this 97-cent proposal will raise the average homeowner’s tax $180 annually on a $100,000 home. So that means $360 on a $200,000 home, which fits many Oakville homeowners.
I cannot believe that school officials and the school board could not see their shortfalls coming in the past several years. A much-needed but lower amount should have been asked for earlier so the burden would not be as heavy on the homeowners.
As a 20-year resident I have paid their taxes, but not having a child going to their schools in those 20 years, I am very upset, and I intend to vote “no.”
I hope other Oakville residents who feel as I do will also vote “no” on this proposition.
