Oakville Legion team starts to turn corner

After opening the 2008 season with a 15-game losing streak, the Oakville Legion baseball team has bounced back by winning five of its last 10 games.

“At the beginning of the season, we had our struggles in putting together a complete game,” said Oakville head coach Matt Boyer. “When we had a good pitching performance, we struggled defensively. I think we’re starting to play better baseball here in the second half of the season.”

Last Saturday afternoon, Oakville defeated Danville (Ill.) 10-2 in the Midwest Classic as starting pitcher Mitch Seward threw a complete game of five innings and grabbed his first win of the season. Seward gave up just two runs on eight hits and had four strikeouts. Seward also racked up two hits at the plate in and drove in two runs.

“Mitch pitched a real good game,” Boyer said. “I gave him a couple extra days rest, and he came in and had his confidence and command of his pitches. He had command of the game from the first inning on.”

Oakville second baseman Dan Regan also racked up two hits against Danville as he scored three runs and drove in two runs.

“Dan’s basically been one of our top two to three hitters this year,” Boyer said. “His approach at the plate has been solid and he’s really been a leader at the plate and on the field. Dan’s really gone out there and led by example.”

Shortstop Nick Tucci’s two-hit performance yielded one run scored to help push his batting average over .200.

“Nick’s had an up and down year,” Boyer said. “His average is not where he’d like it to be, but when he has a good approach at the plate, it shows.”

Oakville is back in action this Friday evening as they take on Lemay at 8 p.m. at Heine Meine Field.

“This is the first time that we play Lemay because the last game we had scheduled with them got rained out,” Boyer said. “This is a good rivalry game because the kids go to school together.”
