Oakville journalism students win awards

Six Oakville Senior High School journalism students won national write-off competition awards at the Journalism Educa-tion Association Fall Convention in Atlan-ta, Ga.

Five Prowl newspaper staff members were recognized. Albert Maixner earned a Superior Award for Sports Writing.

Excellent Awards were won by Monica Carroll in the Advertising category and Megan Henry in the Caption Writing category. Earning Honorable Mention awards were Brett Hammond in the Review Writ-ing category and Ian Darnell in the Editor-ial Writing category.

Tiger Paw yearbook staff member Sarah Dalton earned an Excellent Award in the category for Layout: Inside Pages.

More than 1,446 students participated in the write-off contests, with 481 winning awards. In all, 129 students earned Excel-lent Awards, 77 won Superior Awards and 275 received Honorable Mention Awards.

Oakville High sent 24 journalism students from the yearbook and newspaper classes to the convention.

While there, students attended learning sessions in the areas of newspaper, yearbook, photojournalism, design, broadcast, advertising and leadership.
