Oakville High journalism students earn awards

Three Oakville Senior High School journalism students recently won national write-off competition awards at the Journalism Education Association Fall Convention in Philadelphia.

More than 4,700 students from all across America, Canada, England and Brazil attended the four-day conference.

A total of 1,922 students entered the write-off contests with 662 — 35 percent — earning awards. The write-off contests lasted roughly two hours with each student allowed to enter only one competition. Schools also were limited to one entrant per category.

Oakville students honored were:

Lisa Giljum, who won an Honorable Mention in the Yearbook Copy and Captions Student Life category.

Ryan Kulage, who earned an Honorable Mention in the Newspaper Commentary Writing category.

Anthony Vitale, who scored an Honor-able Mention in the Newspaper Sports Writing competition.
