For the Call
The Oakville Senior High girls’ basketball team last week learned a valuable lesson that many athletes have forgotten — win with class.
The Tigers (2-1) held a 22-8 lead at halftime over Bayless in the championship game of the consolation bracket in the Southside Classic. Tiger head coach Paul Harrington decided his players needed to lay off their press defense and show some respect to the Broncos.
“My philosophy is that we had a considerable lead, so we decided to take off the press defense in the second half,” Harrington told the Call.
“It was an opportunity to get our bench into the game and someday the shoe is going to be on the other foot and we hope that coaches have the same respect against us,” he said.
Oakville handed the Broncos a 48-36 defeat as the Tiger’s Faith Zabek led the black-and-gold with 14 points, seven rebounds, two steals, one assist and one blocked shot.
The junior forward is averaging 14.3 points a game this season while hauling in 3.7 rebounds a match.
“Faith was a steady force for us last year,” Harrington said. “It seems that she’s picked up where she left off last season.”
Also scoring eight points each for the Tigers were Stephanie Dippold and Sherry Zehner.
Dippold also notched two steals, two assists and one rebound. The senior guard is currently averaging 7.7 points a game this season while recording 2.3 rebounds a contest.
“She (Dippold) had worked extremely hard in the offseason and it’s really paying off,” Harrington said.
“She’s been a steady force for us in all three games this season.”
Zehner grabbed two rebounds to compliment her eight points. The junior center is second on the team in scoring with 13 points a game and 3.3 rebounds a match.
“Sherry’s a tough kid that just loves to play the game,” Harrington said.
“Sherry and Faith are our strengths this season,” he added.
The Tigers play host to Seckman on Friday and are looking for revenge after the Jaguars ousted Oakville from the district playoffs last season in a close 61-58 battle.
The game is scheduled to tipoff at 7 p.m.
