Oakville High girls’’ soccer team ready for District 8 Tournament

By STEPHEN GLOVER

For the Call

Like many teams in the metro area, the Oakville Senior High School girls’ soccer team has been severely affected by the lousy weather this month.

The Tigers (18-6-0, 8-0 Suburban South) felt the ill effects of Mother Nature last week as they competed in six games over a seven-day span, posting a record of 4-2.

Oakville finished the regular season with 3-2 loss to Francis Howell North.

Despite the loss, Oakville Head Coach Dave Robben believes that the experience and conditioning of playing such a grueling schedule will benefit the Tigers come time for the playoffs.

“It doesn’t matter who you’re playing, you’re playing in game conditions,” Robben told the Call. “I think it should be very beneficial to us come district play.”

The Tigers found themselves down 3-0 after the first 30 minutes of play against Francis Howell North until senior midfielder Allison Jones scored on a pass by junior forward Cathy Headrick.

Oakville scored again in the second half with a goal by junior forward Lisa Pucci as senior midfielder Megan Brockman received the assist.

“We were able to hang in there and re-group at halftime,” Robben said. “We really came alive in the last 10 minutes.”

The Tigers will compete in the District 8 Tournament this week at Seckman High School. Oakville was slated to play Fox Monday afternoon — after the Call went to press.

Should they advance to the championship game, the Tigers will play at 5 p.m. today — May 22. All of the district games will be played at Seckman.
