Oakville claims district soccer title; girls advance to state sectional

Two second-half goals were enough to clinch a District 6 title for the Oakville Senior High girls’ soccer team.

The Tigers captured the crown last week with a 2-0 victory over Rockwood Sum-mit.

“Things are going really well,” head coach Dave Robben told the Call. “The team has come together at the right time of the year.”

The Tigers (14-8-1) jumped onto the scoreboard in the second half as senior Sara Cook scored the first goal of her varsity career.

“Sara scored off a really nice setup by Brooke Inman,” Robben said. “At that point, it was a huge goal for us in that it really lifted our spirits.”

Junior midfielder Megan Reel provided the Tigers’ knockout punch against the Jaguars with a goal that brought the score to 2-0.

“It was an early knockout punch for us,” Robben said. “It was a series of three really nice passes between Jasmina (Suljic), (Megan) Flecke and Reel.”

The Tigers meet Hazelwood Central at 8 p.m. today — May 26 — in the state sectional at the Anheuser-Busch Center in Fenton.

Hazelwood Central is 20-3-2 and should pose several problems for Oakville.

“I actually saw them play in their district final and they have bona fide strikers in Jenna Laughlin and Ali Walsh,” Robben said. “Hazelwood Central has been the highest ranked public school team in the area and if we do everything right, we’ve got a shot.”

If the Tigers win, they’ll advance to the state quarterfinal game at 8 p.m. Saturday.
