Oakville boys’ soccer team off to 5-0 start

The Oakville Senior High School boys’ soccer team is riding a five-game winning streak after a 1-0 decision over Mehlville Saturday evening.

“We played really well,” Oakville head coach Dave Robben told the Call. “We really controlled the ball and our ball movement was good.”

The Tigers (5-0, 1-0 Suburban West) scored the lone goal of the game about 15 minutes into the second half of play as forward Chris Stocker converted on a penalty kick. The junior currently has scored two goals this season.

“Chris had a good week last week,” Rob-ben said. “He’s primarily a striker, and he created some problems for the Mehlville defense. He’s very dangerous with the ball around the box.”

Oakville starting goalkeeper Ken Cooper recorded his fourth shutout of the season as he upped his record to 5-0 with a 0.20 goals against average.

“Ken made a couple of saves to keep us in the game and then protect the lead,” Robben said. “He’s a veteran player that’s very athletic and is able to cover the whole goal.”

The Tigers are back in action today — Sept. 15 — as they travel to CBC for a non-conference meeting with the Cadets.

The Cadets defeated Oakville 6-0 last season.

“CBC is the defending state champion that’s come into the season ranked in the top five in the nation,” Robben said.

“They play on a turf field and that should be good for us. We’ll try to continue to play our game and we should match up better with them this year than we have in the past,” he added.

Oakville’s road game at CBC is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
