Oakville American Legion varsity team looks to district tourney after 9-6 loss

Oakville American Legion starting pitcher Jake Morgan threw a perfect game through five innings before yielding seven runs in the sixth inning in a 9-6 loss to Brentwood Sunday night.

The loss for Oakville (23-19, 5-7 District 10) marked an evening where head coach Matt Boyer believes that his team became too relaxed once Brentwood got its first hit of the game.

“The way the game was going, it might have been going too smooth,” Boyer told the Call.

“Once they (Brentwood) got that first hit, we probably got too relaxed and stopped thinking,” the coach added.

Morgan gave up a total of seven runs on five hits in six innings. His fifth loss of the 2005 season did generate six strikeouts as he dropped his record to 2-5 overall.

“He (Morgan) was going well and it was probably one of his better games,” Boyer said. “His location was great, he was basically putting his pitches where he wanted them to be. We just didn’t make a couple of plays behind him.”

Oakville relief pitcher J.R. Fogelbach threw the final two innings of the game, giving up two runs on six hits in his 14th appearance of the 2005 campaign. Boyer explained that Fogelbach has earned the reputation as Oakville’s relief workhorse this season.

“Basically J.R. has been our innings guy because he can throw multiple days in a row,” Boyer said. “He’s filled in that short relief role really well this year.”

One player who had a solid evening at the plate for Oakville was starting catcher Greg Dambach. Dambach went 3-4 overall with two doubles, one single and one run batted in.

Boyer also believed that Dambach also had a strong game behind the plate.

“Greg seemed to be seeing the ball really well,” Boyer said. “He had about as good of a game behind the plate as he did at the plate.”

Up next for Oakville is the District 10 Tournament with the brackets and sites to be determined after the Call went to press.

Boyer believes that despite receiving a low seed in the tournament, his team can still compete with any team in the district.

“I would journey to guess that we’ll be an eight, nine or 10 seed in the tournament,” Boyer said.

“The top four teams will have a bye, so we’ll play one of the bottom seed teams. We’ve played every team tough and there’s not a team out there that we can’t play with,” he added.
