Most voters won’t see Stenger as ‘political opportunist’ he appears to be

To the editor:

So as I understand the facts, County Councilman Steve Stenger, D-Affton, the person elected to represent south county residents on the County Council, voted for approval of a zoning change that allowed construction of a government-subsidized apartment complex for low-income senior citizens about one year ago.

Nevertheless, he is now promising to do everything in his power to stop the project because “we need to respect the will of the people.”

Sounds noble indeed, except that he’s willing to pursue this course of action even if it results in an almost certain lawsuit and judgment against the county government that will have to be paid for by the taxpayers.

His argument is that the county failed to properly notify the Oakville citizens affected by the zoning change.

So why didn’t Mr. Stenger think to notify those citizens before he voted for the zoning change on their behalf?

Maybe it’s because he wants to run for county executive as a candidate who fights for the people and can use this issue, which he helped create, to burnish that image.

Unfortunately, it will probably work because most voters won’t see him as the political opportunist he clearly appears to be.
