Mehlville votes to hike student parking fees

An increase in high school student parking rates for the 2006-2007 school year was approved last week by the Mehlville Board of Education.

Board members voted 4-3 to establish a fee of $225 per student parking spot at Mehlville High School and Oakville High School for the coming school school year.

The current fee is $50 per student. Voting in favor of the fee increase were President Ken Leach, Vice President Karl Frank Jr., Rita Diekemper and Micheal Ocello.

Opposed were Secretary Tom Correnti, Cindy Christopher and Tom Diehl.

A total of 300 parking spots are available to students at Oakville High School, and 280 parking spots are available to students at Mehlville High School. Seniors are given first consideration for a parking spot. General criteria for receiving a spot include grades and discipline.

The new student parking fee will result in an increase of $101,500 in district revenue for the 2006-2007 school year. The district received $29,000 in student parking revenue for the current school year.
