If Ed Feibig decided to write a wish list to Santa Claus, consistency just might be at the top of that list.

The head coach of the Mehlville Senior High School girls’ basketball team believes that with a little more consistency, his Panthers will become a much better team.

Mehlville (3-2, 0-1 Suburban West) suffered a disappointing 43-28 loss at Lafayette last Friday evening when the Panthers shot just 26.32 percent from the floor.

“We shot 26 percent and you just can’t win that way,” Feibig told the Call. “The intensity just wasn’t quite there. But I think we’re getting a little better each game.”

The Panthers’ woes were also apparent from three-point range and the free-throw line. Mehlville was 2-11 (18.18 percent) on shots from the three-point stripe and was 6-15 (40 percent) from the free-throw line.

Yet Mehlville did win the battle of the boards as the Panthers out rebounded their opponents 31-21

“Six of 15 from the free throw line is awful,” Feibig said. “We did out rebound them and I was surprised about that.”

Mehlville’s Michelle Senf led the Panthers in scoring with 12 points and seven rebounds. For the season, the sophomore forward is averaging 8.8 points and 9.8 rebounds a game.

“Right now Michelle’s struggling a bit with her shooting and that’s because teams are doubling up on her,” Feibig said. “I thought though that she played a pretty good game against Lafayette.”

The Panthers will play host at 7 p.m. today — Dec. 18 — to a highly touted Parkway West squad that beat Lafayette 59-49 the day after Mehlville’s loss to the Lancers.

“The key for us is going to be rebounding,” Feibig said. “If we can hold our own in the glass, I think we’ll be OK.”
