Mehlville Senior High is riding momentum into next week’s District No. 9 girls’ soccer tournament.

The Panthers (9-7-1, 2-5-1 Suburban West) put together a three-game winning streak with shutouts over St. Vincent, 2-0, Sullivan, 10-0, and Seckman, 5-0.

“In the past week I’ve made a few changes in the lineup and I think it’s helped everyone,” head coach Scott Jackson told the Call.

“Right now we’re going to try to go into districts on a high note,” he said.

It hasn’t been much higher this season for the Panthers than it has the past two weeks, as their record shows.

Mehlville’s good fortune began two weeks ago with an 8-0 win over Seckman. Two shutouts later, the Panthers beat Seck-man for the second time. This time by a 5-0 margin.

“We played Seckman before and beat them 8-0, and I didn’t think we were going to be able to do that again to them,” Jack-son said.

“We had several more quality chances but their keeper made some good saves,” he added. “When you go out there and possess the ball, you can keep any average team out of the game.”

Senior midfielder Allison Schaugh-nessey tallied the Panthers’ first goal. She has ten goals and eight assists this season.

“Everything we do goes through her (Schaughnessey),” Jackson said. “When she starts to spread it out, she and (Christy) Capkovic can really score.”

Capkovic proved it against Seckman, continuing her scoring attack by notching the Tiger’s second goal of the game.

The sophomore midfielder has been on a goal-scoring blitz lately, racking up seven goals in the last three games.

She leads the Panthers with 17 goals and nine assists.

“She’s all of a sudden started to move off the ball more,” Jackson said. “She’s scored something like seven goals in the past three games for us.”

Mehlville’s third goal of the game came from Jessica Bartolacci. The sophomore midfielder has two goals and two assists this season.

“This is Jessica’s second year and she had a slow start but lately in the last couple of weeks she’s been playing with confidence,” Jackson said. “She’s really come on strong here lately.”

The Panthers extended their lead to 4-0 in the second half with a goal by midfielder Lisa Krost. The senior has four goals and one assist this season.

“We had her up top because she plays really aggressive,” Jackson said. “Lisa’s filling that really well for us now.”

Sophomore defender Catrina Salama rounded out the Panthers’ fifth and final goal of the game with her first score of the 2005 season.

“Catrina probably does the best job of anyone in anticipating the ball,” Jackson said. “She was able to sneak one over the top of the goalie against Seckman.”

Mehlville ends the 2005 regular season with a home game at 4 p.m. Friday against Webster Groves.

The Statesmen are 5-8-1 overall with a 2-4 record in the Suburban South Conference.

“Webster Groves is one of those teams that’s in the same boat as us,” Jackson said. “There’s a very good chance that we might have to play them again in districts.”
