Mehlville officials to use snow-schedule option this winter

Mehlville School District officials have decided to implement a snow schedule, when appropriate, during the winter months of the 2015-2016 school year.

On days when the district operates on a snow schedule, classes will begin two hours later than their normal start times, according to a news release. The school day will end at the normal time for each building.

“We surveyed our parents and 75 percent either agreed or strongly agreed with having a snow-schedule option,” Deputy Superintendent Brian Lane stated in the release. “As always, the safety of our students and staff during winter weather remains our top priority, so we will be very careful when we decide to call for a snow schedule day.”

Utilizing the snow schedule will depend upon morning road conditions, the chance for additional snow throughout the day and other important criteria, the release stated. If travel is considered to be unsafe, schools and all district activities would be canceled for the entire day.

A snow-schedule school day will count as a full attendance day, so there will not have to be any makeup days later in the spring. All school buses will operate as normal, making their morning stops two hours later than usual. Y Care programs at district schools would also follow the snow schedule and open two hours later than normal.

Breakfast will be available for students arriving before classes begin.

School closing and snow schedule information will be available on the district website, school Facebook pages, Twitter and on local TV and radio stations.
