Mehlville musicians shine at competition

A pair of Mehlville School District students recently stole the show at the Flute Society of St. Louis’ first Young Artist Scholarship Competition at Webster University.

Oakville Senior High School sophomore Maria Garcia and Mehlville Senior High School junior Emily Fiasco each performed a solo in the high school division.

Adjudicator Paula Kasica, a Webster University flute teacher who performs frequently with the Fox Theatre musicals and substitutes with the St. Louis Symphony, was so impressed with Garcia and Fiasco that each student earned a Master Class session with her.

At the conclusion of the competition, Garcia was announced as a second-place winner in the high school division and earned a cash award.

Garcia’s parents are Ursula and Marc Garcia. Fiasco is the daughter of Debra and Jim Fiasco.

Both talented students take flute lessons from Washington Middle School Band Director Jennifer Garrison Brown.
