Mehlville High girls’ basketball team wins big against Oakville, Lindbergh

With games against Oakville, Lindbergh and John Burroughs on its schedule, the Mehlville Senior High School girls’ basketball team knew it would have its hands full last week.

But the Panthers (8-0, 2-0 Suburban West) came away virtually unscathed as they posted a 52-39 win over Oakville, a 69-61 win at Lindbergh and a 47-29 thumping of John Burroughs last Saturday in the first round of the Visitation Holiday Invitational.

Mehlville head coach Ed Feibig believes that the Panthers’ win over Oakville and Lindbergh were monumental because they not only were conference wins, but also wins against two district opponents.

“The biggest thing about the wins over Oakville and Lindbergh is that not only did it put us 2-0 in the conference, but they’re also two big district wins,” Feibig told the Call.

The Panthers win over John Burroughs was not as significant as those over Oak-ville and Lindbergh, but it did put Mehl-ville in the winner’s bracket in the Visi-tation Invitational.

“John Burroughs was not nearly as physical as Oakville and Lindbergh,” Feibig said. “We actually had our subs in most of the second half of the game.”

Mehlville’s Kayla Gordon led all scorers with 14 points and eight rebounds. The junior guard also recorded three assists and one steal in the Panther’s win over John Burroughs.

“Kayla had a pretty good night considering that she played only half of the game,” Feibig said. “She had 37 points in the past three games and you just can’t ask much more than that from someone.”

Michelle Senf also scored in double figures for the Panthers as she racked up 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The senior forward also passed the 1,000-point career mark in Friday’s win over Lindbergh.

“If Michelle was on a different team, she would have 1,500 or 1,600 points,” Feibig said. “But we’ve had some very good players and we don’t have to rely just on her like many other teams would have to.”

The Panthers are back in action Monday afternoon when they take on Metro in the second round of the Visitation Tourna-ment.

“Metro’s lightning quick and they play good defense,” Feibig said. “They’re the type of team that’s going to try to score a lot of points on transition baskets.”

Mehlville’s game against Metro is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
