Mehlville High Band earns Superior rating

The Mehlville Senior High School Honor Band continued its tradition of musical ex-cellence by garnering a Superior rating and sweeping its division at the recent Fiesta-val Invitational Music Competition at Gat-linburg, Tenn.

The Mehlville band, conducted by Direc-tor Don Kinnison and Assistant Director Tony Brown, performed “Eagle Squadron March,” a British march composed by Kenneth Alford; “Amazing Grace,” composed by Frank Ticheli; and “With Heart and Voice,” composed by David Gillingham.

The band was given a Superior rating, First-Place Concert Band/Wind Ensemble, and First Place in the overall Fiesta-val In-vitational Music Competition.

The judges named Emily Fiasco Out-standing Soloist for her flute and piccolo performance in “Eagle Squadron March.” 

Stephen Mues was the featured soloist in “Amazing Grace.”

The awards ceremony took place at the Gatlinburg Dixie Stampede. Drum Major Claudia Chavez and Percussion Captain Hilary Gokenbach accepted the awards on the band’s behalf. During the Stampede dinner show, Kinnison and Heather Craig were chosen to participate in a race.

While in Gatlinburg, the band also en-joyed outings to Dollywood and the Comedy Barn comedy show. Brown and Joe Suntrup were chosen to perform with the cast on stage.

Fiasco is the daughter of James and Debra Fiasco. Mues is the son of George and Di-ane Mues. Chavez is the daughter of Sal-vador and Teresa Chavez. Gokenbach is the daughter of Marc and Virginia Gokenbach. Craig is the daughter of Todd and Rebecca Craig. Suntrup is the son of Michael and Myra Suntrup.

The band’s final concert of the year will take place at 7 p.m. Monday, May 23, in Jones Gym at the high school, 3200 Lemay Ferry Road. All members of the graduating senior class will be honored. Admis-sion is free.
