Mehlville Senior High School graduate Carla Hoppe recently learned that she has been chosen to receive the B.A. Purcell Memorial Scholarship from Emerson, according to a Mehlville School District news release.

The $1,500 scholarship is renewable for up to four years, which could bring Hoppe as much as $6,000 in financial aid.

Emerson selects 30 students nationwide for the B. A. Purcell Memorial Scholarship, which was established in 1967 as a memorial to Bernard A. Purcell, vice president of corporate manufacturing. The purpose of the scholarship is to help defray the cost of a college education for outstanding children of Emerson employees. To qualify, a student must be the son, daughter or stepchild of an active Emerson employee.

Applicants then are judged based on college entrance exam scores, class rank, school and community extracurricular activities and employment.

In announcing the selection of Hoppe as a winner, Emerson Chief Executive Officer David N. Farr wrote, “To have been selected as a winner from among the many candidates who applied speaks highly for your efforts and your abilities.”

He added, “We are proud that you are part of the Emerson family and wish you outstanding success in your field of study.”

Hoppe, a Mehlville valedictorian, graduated in June with a 4.0 grade-point average. She also was recognized for having perfect attendance all four years of high school. The daughter of Ray and Marea Kluth-Hoppe, she will attend Ohio Wesleyan University in the fall and major in zoology.
