Mehlville basketball team to regroup over break; will return to action Jan. 6

During the winter break, many area high school teams participate in holiday tournaments as they cram several games in just a few days.

But that won’t be the case for the Mehlville Senior High School girls’ basketball team as the Panthers will use the time off for rest, relaxation and the opportunity to hone their skills.

In fact, head coach Ed Feibig doesn’t even want to see his players until after the holidays.

“We’re not even touching a ball until after Christmas,” Feibig told the Call. “They need a break and Christmas tournaments are OK, but it’s hard during the holidays to stay focused.”

On Tuesday of last week, the Panthers (4-3 overall and 0-2 in the Suburban West Conference) racked up a 43-40 win at home over Cleveland.

“They (Cleveland) are a pretty good team,” Feibig said. “I thought the game would be a little easier. I think they’ve improved about 100 percent.”

Mehlville’s Carissa Pratt led the Panthers with 16 points. The senior guard also recorded three rebounds and three blocked shots, while notching one assist.

“I’ve been putting her on the other team’s best player because she’s been playing such great defense,” Feibig said. “She played smart and was aggressive. I think she did a great job in that game.”

The Panthers played host to Parkway West later in the week and were not as lucky with the Longhorns as they suffered a 42-39 heartbreaker. Despite the loss, Feibig spoke highly of his team’s play.

“We caused them to make 22 turnovers,” Feibig said. “I was thoroughly happy with our defense. There really wasn’t anyone that stood out, they all did a great job. We had four or five chances to win it in the end.”

Mehlville freshman Alyse Gordon left the game after being clipped on the chin by a Parkway West player.

Despite missing the fourth quarter, the Panthers starting forward led the Panthers with nine points.

Gordon also had four steals, three rebounds, three blocked shots and one assist in the loss to the Longhorns.

“She really goes after the ball,” Feibig said. “Her not being in the fourth quarter really hurt us.”

The Panthers return to action at 7 p.m. Jan. 6 when they travel to Parkway Central for a conference showdown with the Colts.
