Mary Sanders Hughes

Died: Monday, November 21, 2016

Age: 59

Mary Sanders Hughes, 59, died at 11:45 a.m. Nov. 21 at her home in Oakville, under the care of family and BJC Hospice.

Mrs. Hughes was born Aug. 3, 1957, in Indianola, Miss., the daughter of John (Stanny) Sanders and Janie Dale. She was a resident of Oakville for nearly 30 years.

She married the love of her life, Robert Hughes, on Oct. 20, 1979, at her parents’ home in Greenwood, Miss.

Mrs. Hughes had an unwavering passion for Christ and a love for writing and speaking about her faith. She authored stories, devotionals, poetry, Bible studies and was published in numerous books, magazines and newspapers. Her stories are known for depicting her reflections of seeking God in everyday moments.

As an active member of her beloved church, Canaan Baptist, Mrs. Hughes participated in women’s ministries, prayer circles and facilitated Bible studies.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Margo (Shane) Cook and Julie Hughes of St. Louis, and sister, Penny (Mack) Varner of Vicksburg, Miss.

Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather Matt Dale, aunt Viola B. Sanders and sister Peggy Sparkman.

A homecoming celebration and memorial will take place at 6 p.m. today — Thursday, Dec. 1 — at Canaan Baptist Church, 5409 Baumgartner Road.

In lieu of flowers, tributes and memorials can be made to Canaan Baptist Church or Missouri Baptist Cancer Center in Mrs. Hughes’ name.
