Local Historical Society issues

second call for submissions

to book of wartime memoirs

What began as a local community group’s effort to produce a history book of the wartime experiences of local residents now has become a part of a large national project – and there’s still time for area residents to get involved.

The Sappington-Concord Historical Society is issuing a second call for stories to add to its book of wartime memoirs. The group recently joined in partnership with the Veterans History Project, a program sponsored by the Library of Congress.

“We are excited about this opportunity to record the experiences of our veterans nationally as well as locally,” said Leonard “Bud” Bornemann, a World War II veteran and chairman of the Histor-ical Society’s War History Book committee. Bornemann initiated the book project last fall and reported that he has received more than 40 stories to date. The society plans to publish the book next year and then submit it to the national program.

The Veterans History Project is creating a national collection of stories and documents donated by veterans, their families, community groups and students. Congress started the project in 2000 to chronicle these wartime memories of men and women who served in combat operations, as well as those involved on the home front and citizens who supported the armed services.

Participation is open to all branches of the service, in all wars and police actions in which the United States was involved, including World War II and the Korean, Vietnam and Persian Gulf wars. Subject matter is unlimited.

“It may be humorous, a display of courage, a combat experience, a letter from home,” Bornemann said. “It can be almost anything that would be of interest to a reader.”

Guidelines for submission to the Sappington-Concord book are:

· Stories should be about anyone who has lived in the south county area.

· Stories must be signed by the author. If the story is about someone other than the author, the writer should sign his or her name and add some notation as “in memory of” or “as told to” indicating that the story is not about the author.

· Stories should be limited to 1,500 words. There is no minimum number of words.

· A few photos may be submitted with each story.

For further information, call Bornemann at 843-2691.

Stories should be sent to Jill Borage, 4781 Chapel Hill, St. Louis, Mo. 63128. The eadline for submissions is Jan. 31.

For the Call

Two dozen winners and runners-up from 11 categories will split more than $3,000 in prizes and gift certificates for their entries in Call Newspapers’ sixth annual Home for the Holidays recipe contest.

The newspaper received a total of 252 entries. The previous record, 185 entries, was set last year. This year contestants had 28 fewer days to submit entries.

Recipes came from as far away as Waterloo, Ill., Festus and Shrewsbury.

Readers in Lemay posted the biggest increase in participation, but Concord residents in postal ZIP Code 63128 remain the most avid cooks in south county.

Fenton residents also made significant contributions, while submissions from Crestwood, Oakville, Sunset Hills, Arnold and Imperial remained strong.

Eight individuals entered south county’s Cooking Hall of Fame with their winning recipes and due to the number of prizes offered by generous local merchants, judges this year decided to begin naming runners-up in each category. Recipes were so good that – unlike previous yearsâ no one won more than one category in 2002.

Terisa Rooney of Oakville won our Hor D’oeuvres category. She is a first-time winner in a field of eight entries with her Asian Chicken Wings. Jill Reichardt of Affton was runner up with her Bruchetta recipe.

Carol White of Sunset Hills won our Holiday Hams category with her recipe for Baked Ham With Red Currant Sauce. Louise Payne of Fenton was runner-up with her recipe for Pineapple Ham Poupon. Nine entries were received.

Doreen Hanneken, of Concord, won her fifth title with her fourth different version of Tender Turkey. There were six entries in this category, but judges could not agree on a runner up.

Louise Hauf, of Crestwood, was a first time winner with her Nutty Apple-Raisin Stuffing recipe. There were 17 entries in the Deserving Dressing category. Lisa Schumacher, of Lemay, was runner up with Lisa’s Holiday Stuffing.

Diane Schwarz, of Concord, was the winner of our Super Soup category. Her recipe for Creamy Butternut Soup earned her third cooking title. There were 19 entries in this category. Claudine Leara, herself a two-time winner, was runner up with her recipe for Pumpkin, Pear Soup.

Affton’s June Raftery topped a field of 33 entries in our Special Salads category. Her Yuletide Salad tasted great and makes a great presentation. She is a first-time winner. Angela Kotowicz, of Fenton, was runner up with her Harvest Salad with Raspberry Vinaigrette.

Oakville’s Lisa Rapp won her eighth title in the Scintillating Side Dish category. Her recipe for Sweet Potato and Apple Casserole made mouths water. Bette Collins of Affton was also a winner in this category with her recipe for Caramel Apple Carrots. Collins won her fourth cooking title this year.

Judges have awarded two entries in the Scintillating Side Dish category for the past three years because a holiday feast would be less festive with but one side dish. There were 43 entries in this category, but judges could not agree on runners up.

Affton’s Jill Reichardt was a first-time winner in the Positive Roll Models category with her French Bread recipe. There were 21 entries in this category and Patti Kappel, of Oakville was runner up with her recipe for Holiday Biscuit Strips.

The Call received 51 entries in the Just Desserts category. Tops was Sandra McHaney’s Orange Pineapple Layer Cake. Runner up Janet Short, of Concord, with her Chocolate Kahlua Cake.

Crestwood’s January Marra was a first-time winner in the Holiday Beverages category with her Grandma’s Punch. There were 14 entries in this category. Runner up was Betty Collins, of Affton, with her Cranberry Sparkle Punch.

The Loveable Leftovers category produced another first-time winner, Catherine Fritz of Waterloo, Ill. Her Mexican Turkey Manicotti was judged best among 18 entries. Judges picked another first-time entrant, Beverly Giraudo, of Lemay as runner up for her Turkey Tetrazzini.
