Longtime Mehlville High assistant principal retires

A longtime Mehlville Senior High School assistant principal has retired, ending his 30-year career with the district.

David Mana, who began as a Mehlville Senior High English teacher in 1974 and then became assistant principal in 1991, retired Dec. 19 because of health-related issues, according to a letter sent to parents by Principal Vincent Viviano.

Mana was the assistant principal for the senior class.

“Mr. Mana’s family is experiencing a very difficult time due to health-related issues,” Viviano stated in the letter. “His family needs him to help them through a very difficult time and our superintendents are working with Mr. Mana to make his transition into retirement as smooth as possible.”

Mana told the Call Monday that he did “retire for family reasons,” but he would miss working at Mehlville Senior High.

“I’m going to miss the kids the most,” Mana said. “The kids really kept me young-thinking and they were like my family and I tried to treat them that way.

“Hopefully, I did some good for them, I don’t know if I did,” he continued.

“It was a pleasure to serve the kids, their families and the district. I wish them nothing but the best in the future,” Mana added, noting that all three of his children had graduated from Mehlville Senior High School and they were doing “good.”

The letter announced that Mike McGough, who served as a former principal of Washington Middle School, would finish the first semester for Mana and temporarily act as the senior class assistant principal.

Once the first semester is completed, according to the letter, an interim assistant principal will be appointed from within the district and then the position will be posted sometime in February for all applicants, with a hiring decision to be completed in March.
