Local boards set tax-rate hearing dates

Area taxing entities will be setting their tax rates right up to the last minute because of the county’s delay in releasing needed information.

Under state statute, taxing entities must conduct public tax-rate hearings before Sept. 1, however St. Louis County Board of Equalization hearings were not scheduled until last week and the county assessor will not complete calculations until the second week of August, Mehlville Superintendent Tim Ricker recently explained to Board of Education members during a July 22 meeting.

State statute also stipulates that tax rates must be established no later than Sept. 1, requiring that notice of the tax-rate hearing be posted at least seven days in advance — leaving two weeks for entities to set the tax rates.

The Mehlville Board of Education has set its tax-rate hearing as the first item of business during its Aug. 25 meeting.

The meeting tentatively is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the boardroom of the Central Office Administration Building, 3120 Lemay Ferry Road.

However, Ricker indicated there is a possibility the meeting will be conducted at the new Oakville Elementary School, which is on Yaeger Road.

The fiscal 2005 budget approved by board members projected an estimated rate of $3.9123 per $100 of assessed valuation for the 2004-2005 school year, up from the current rate of $3.8750 per $100.

The Mehlville Fire Protection District Board of Directors also set its tax-rate hearing for 6 p.m. Aug. 30 at the district’s headquarters, 11020 Mueller Road, Green Park.

The fire district’s current tax rate is 90.5 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. The district has not yet indicated a proposed tax rate for the next year.
