Timely hitting is necessary to win games, and the Lindbergh High School baseball team could not score any runs in a 6-0 loss last week to Seckman.

“We just could not get anything going offensively,” Lindbergh head coach Darin Scott told the Call. “By losing that game, it put us in the No. 4 seed in districts, which makes things really tough for us.”

The Flyers (13-10, 5-3 Suburban West) hammered out five hits against Seckman starting pitcher Chad Molly, but generated just two extra-base hits on a double by starting pitcher Zach Outman and a triple by shortstop Nick McKenzie.

Outman gave up five runs on six hits in just four innings for his second loss of the season. The senior is 3-2 overall this season with a 2.21 earned run average.

“Other than this game and the first inning of the season, he’s given up just one earned run,” Scott said. “When your ace pitcher goes four shutout innings and you don’t score some runs, it’s hard to win.”

The lone bright spot in the Flyers’ lineup was McKenzie, who was two of three at the plate, including the aforementioned triple. The senior infielder is holding down a .327 batting average with six runs batted in.

“Nick was our lone bright spot at the plate,” Scott said. “He had a jolt to center field, so you’ve got to give him some credit. He’s been a real versatile player for us this season.”

The Flyers were slated to take on St. Mary’s Monday — after the Call went to press — in the first round of the District No. 3 Tournament. Lindbergh and St. Mary’s faced each other in the first game of the 2006 season when the Dragons blasted the Flyers for seven runs in the first inning and held on to a 7-6 win in just five innings.

St. Mary’s also knocked the Flyers out of the district tournament last season in a 14-11 setback.

“One through five, I’ll put our district up against anyone in the state,” Scott said. “St. Mary’s knocked us out of the district last year, and whomever takes charge right away is going to win this game.”
