Lindbergh suffers first loss of season

For the Lindbergh Flyers to get back to the Class 6 Show-Me-Bowl in 2003, they are going to have to deal with a lot of high-level opponents that play some high-level football.

Teams on the list that could get in the way of the Flyers include the Parkway South Patriots, Mehlville Panthers, the Hazel-wood Central Hawks and the CBC Cadets.

You officially can add the Kirkwood Pioneers to the list. And, after seeing them dominate Lindbergh in every aspect of the game last Friday night, you might want to put them right near the top of that list.

Kirkwood, in its very impressive 26-7 victory, sacked Lindbergh quarterback Brock Bond 10 times, holding him to only 60 yards passing and keeping the entire Lindbergh offense out of sync all evening.

Dan Gabris led the Flyers with 75 yards rushing, scoring the only Lindbergh touchdown on the night when he picked up a fumble and ran it in from the 26-yard line. Flyers Coach Tom Beauchamp credited Kirkwood for its outstanding effort.

“They came hard at us and had a good game plan,” he said. “Our defense held pretty well several times. If they had not, it could have been ugly.”

Kirkwood was paced offensively by Tim Jones, who ran for 73 yards and two touchdowns, helping the Pioneers improve to 4-2 on the season. Quarterback Matt Krapfl completed 13 of 18 passes for 153 yards and a touchdown for Kirkwood, which handed the Flyers their first loss since their appearance in the 2002 Show-Me-Bowl.

Now they must move forward and prepare for Parkway South, which at 4-3 presents quite a challenge for 6-1 Lind-bergh. Beauchamp knows that the Flyers cannot afford another loss with district play starting this weekend.

“In the district you have to play every game like it’s the district championship,” Beauchamp said. “We know if we can get this one, we can be in the drivers seat. We don’t want to have to rely on other teams, so we’ll have to get back in our groove.”

Lindbergh will take on Parkway South next. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Lind-bergh High School, 4900 S. Lindbergh Blvd.
