Going into the final game of the regular season, the Lindbergh High School baseball team realized it couldn’t win a share of the Suburban West Conference championship.

But the Flyers (12-11, 4-4 Suburban West) played the spoiler role, shooting down Parkway South’s hopes for a conference championship with a 14-4 win on the road.

“Any time we have Andy (Flett) throwing, we’re going to be competitive,” Lindbergh head coach Darin Scott said. “Our hitters did a nice job getting extra base hits and our numbers came from all of those extra base hits.”

Flett once again mesmerized opposing hitters, giving up four runs on six hits in five innings. The senior hurler walked three batters and struck out eight. Flett is 6-0 overall with a 3.73 ERA.

“It wasn’t Andy’s best performance, but he really reached back and did a great job pitching himself out of jams,” Scott said. “He gave our offense the chance to get back on track.”

Designated hitter Travis Brown was on fire for the Flyers, driving in four runs on three hits and scoring two runs. Brown also drew a walk to bring his batting average up to .397 with a team-leading 19 RBI.

“Travis came through big time for us,” Scott said. “He had a great day and has done a really nice job for us in the DH role. It was great to see him hit the ball with some authority.”

First baseman Terry Maness racked up three doubles. His three hits scored one run while driving in three runs to bring his average to .353 with 12 RBI.

Senior shortstop Cody Higgs also put together a three-hit effort that also included a home run. Higgs scored three runs and drove in two runs to raise his batting average up to .411 with 17 RBI.

“It was great to see those three seniors really step it up,” Scott said. “Nine hits, eight RBI and six runs scored out of your three seniors is a good day.”

The Flyers are back in action at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday when they play host to Rockwood Summit in the Suburban South/West Conference Tournament. The Flyers also play Saturday as they enter the Class 4, District 3 tournament against an opponent to be named after press time.
