When the Lindbergh and Oakville high school boys’ soccer teams meet, spectators always are guaranteed a good and exciting game.
That was true Sept. 29 when the host Flyers battled the Tigers into overtime before the two teams settled for a 1-1 tie.
“It was a back-and-forth game,” Oakville head coach Dave Robben told the Call. “They (Lindbergh) always come ready to play. It was a very spirited game.”
The tie for the Flyers (6-3-2, 2-2-1 Su-burban West) capped off a five-game run in which the Flyers went 3-1-1.
“I think we felt good about getting a couple of wins in the CYC Tournament,” Lind-bergh head coach Dan Dorsey told the Call. “I’m encouraged that we were able to put the ball into the net.”
The Tigers (10-0-5, 3-0-2 Suburban West) took a 1-0 lead against Lindbergh when senior midfielder John Tate scored on an assist by junior midfielder Sam Shaffer. The goal by Tate was his first of the season.
“The goal was one of those goals where John was playing heads-up ball,” Robben said. “The ball was played into the six-yard area and he finished the opportunity.”
Lindbergh tied the game later in the first half when senior forward Kyle O’Leary racked up his 10th goal of the season on a rebound shot by Tim Laurentius.
“What a great goal,” Dorsey said. “Kyle put a shot in on a rebound by (Tim) Lauren-tius.”
The Flyers are back in action at 5:30 p.m. today — Oct. 6 — when they travel to Parkway North for a non-conference meeting with the Vikings. The Flyers also play host to Chaminade at 5 p.m. Friday in one of their biggest home games of the season.
“Parkway North’s a program that struggled last year, but I think they’ll be a team that will come out and play pretty hard nosed,” Dorsey said.
“Chaminade is obviously one of the premier teams in the area. This is going to be a game where we’ll go in with the idea that we’ll try to neutralize their offense and get them to make mistakes,” he added.
The Tigers also are in action this week as they participate in the Hudson Memorial Tournament at the Anheuser-Busch Con-ference Center.
The Tigers were scheduled to play St. Pius on Monday and Parkway West on Tuesday — after the Call went to press.
The Tigers will finish pool play in the tourney when they face Marquette at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday.
