There may not be a tiebreaker system in the Suburban West Conference, but the Lindbergh boys’ baseball team knows who the champions are.

The Flyers (17-5, 11-3 Suburban West) currently are atop the conference standings, with Lafayette just behind them with a mark of 10-3 and a rescheduled game against Parkway Central at hand.

A win by the Lancers also would give them an 11-3 mark in conference play, yet the Flyers won both of their games against Lafayette this season.

“One way or the other, we’re conference champions,” Lindbergh head coach Darin Scott told the Call. “We beat Lafayette twice this year and they know it.”

Lindbergh finished out the regular season on a sour note with a 13-12 loss to conference rival Parkway West.

“We got down 4-0 and came back with nine runs in the second inning,” Scott told the Call. “When you score that many runs, you should win those types of games.”

Flyers starting pitcher Mark Spinner threw six innings, of which he gave up nine earned runs on 15 hits. The senior pitcher walked two and struck out two in the no-decision effort.

“He (Spinner) was keeping us in the ballgame,” Scott said.

“We’re going to really have to rely on him come districts. I just tell my pitchers to go out there and throw strikes and keep us in ballgames.”

Senior second baseman Tony Bigogno was hot at the plate for the Flyers as he went 3-4 with three runs batted in and two doubles.

Bigogno currently is batting .325 with 14 RBI.

“Tony has been extremely solid for us at second base,” Scott said. “He just goes up to the plate and swings at good pitches. I’m really proud of how he’s improved his hitting over the course of a season.”

Lindbergh was back in action Tuesday — after the Call went to press — as they took on Mehlville in the semifinal game of the District No. 3 tournament at Vianney High.

“Mehlville is a very dangerous ball club at this time of the year,” Scott said. “Match-up wise, I think the main thing you notice with Mehlville is that they’re really solid defensively. Against them, you really have to earn what you get.”

The championship game was scheduled at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. All of the Flyers’ games are to be played at Vianney.
