Mother Nature has not been a friend Lindbergh Senior High School baseball team this season.

Like many schools last week, the Flyers experienced several rainouts. Given that, it’s been very hard to muster some kind of winning streak.

“It’s been tough to get any type of consistency with the way that the weather’s been,” Flyers Head Coach Darren Scott told the Call. “Everyone’s facing the same thing right now. I think that we still have as good of a chance as anyone in our district.”

The Flyers (8-7, 2-6 Suburban West) suffered a 16-8 setback against a talented La-fayette squad that won the conference title last season.

“We got a couple of pitches up early in the game and they hit three home runs off of us in the first inning,” Scott said. “We got down early but we did battle back and that’s good to see. Lafayette had a little too much firepower that day for us.”

Lindbergh starting pitcher Charlie Schin-sky struggled in the first inning as he gave up five earned runs on six hits.

The junior hurler was pulled from the game after giving up three home runs in the first, while recording zero outs and walking one batter.

Despite the poor performance by his starting pitcher, Scott was quick to point out Schinsky’s importance come time for the playoffs.

“Charlie is a good pitcher,” Scott said. “He just got the ball up and they did what they’re supposed to do with those kinds of pitches. I have a lot of confidence in Charlie and he’ll be a major part of our team going into districts.”

Two Lindbergh infielders provided some fireworks for the Flyers as senior second baseman John Robertson and junior third baseman Dan Gabris hammered out back-to-back home runs.

“John’s a pretty versatile player and is ready to play for us at any position,” Scott said. “He’s one of the seniors that we look to for leadership and has done a really good job for us in relief.”

To say that Robertson has done a good job in the relief mode could be an understatement with his 1.83 earned run average. In 151/3 innings pitched, Robertson has yet to give up a home run.

Gabris also has been one of the Flyers’ top pitching threats this season with a record of 3-2 and a team-high 23 strikeouts.

“Dan’s been pretty hot right now at the plate,” Scott said. “We’re going to need to look to him on the mound come time for districts.”

The Flyers resume play today — May 15 — as they play host to Mehlville in a conference matchup that could bring them closer to having a .500 mark in conference play. Lindbergh also will play host to Fox Friday afternoon for another tough conference match.

“Mehlville is an important game for us because it’s a natural rivalry between the two schools,” Scott said. “We felt like we let the last game with them slip away and we’re battling for a good district seed. Fox has beaten us twice and they’ve been playing pretty well in the conference this season. I think we match up pretty well with them.”

Both the Mehlville and Fox contests are scheduled for a 4:15 p.m. start.
