Gone is the streak — and the girls’ basketball team at Lindbergh Senior High is hoping that it never shows its ugly face again this season.

That streak would be the Flyers’ five-game losing skid that started Dec. 29 in a 58-55 loss to Pacific in the championship game of the Seckman Tournament.

Yet Lindbergh head coach Bill Thoele knew that his girls would break out of their slump.

“I knew that we would get over it,” Thoele told the Call. “The big thing was that we were in each one of those games and could have won them.”

In four of the Flyers’ five losses, they lost by an average of just seven points. Two of those losses were by a total of four points. Thoele had all the confidence in the world in his troops during the drought.

“They’re a pretty tough group,” Thoele said. “I knew that we would eventually get over the hump.”

Lindbergh (7-7, 1-2 Suburban West) got over the hump last Friday in a 52-40 thumping of Kirkwood to grab its first conference win of the season.

“We were 0-2 in the conference and really needed the win,” Thoele said. “We knew we had to put together four good quarters. We hung in there and got us a win.”

Junior guard Amy Hake led all scorers with 16 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists in the win. Her current scoring average of 16.7 points a game this season leads the Suburban West Conference. She also leads the conference in steals (61) and three-point shots made (23).

“You can count on Amy in every game,” Thoele said. “It’s not all give-me’s because she has to work hard in every game.”

Junior forward Paula Smith also scored in double figures for the Flyers as she racked up 10 points, four rebounds and two blocked shots in the win.

“Paula’s been struggling with her shot,” Thoele said. “She’s getting there and was a big part in our win on Friday.”

The Flyers are back in action this week as they play host to the Lindbergh Invitational. Fort Zumwalt West, Fox, Marquette, Pacific, St. Charles, Soldan and Seckman all are scheduled to participate, which should prove good competition for the Flyers.

In fact, Pacific has beaten Lindbergh twice this season. The championship game of the tournament will be at 7:30 p.m. this Thursday.
